What is The Square Social Centre?
The Square is a free-space for events, meetings, workshops, play and organizing. The goal of the Square is to create horizontal space to share our desires and skills and build community. We want to empower people to become active in organizing events and activities in the space; hopefully building stronger ties and networks that permeate Guelph.
What is a Social Centre?
A social center is a space for grassroots political and social events to be housed. Generally, they come out of a history of anti-authoritarian counterculture. Many modern day social centers today are modeled on the European Social Centers created in the 60′s 70′s and 80′s in the European Autonomist and Squatter movements and the Social Centers in the liberated zones of Spain in Catalonia and Andalusia in the late 1930′s.
